Church History

TRUE GOSPEL TEMPLE CHURCH (CHURCH) was founded in 1986 by Bishop Augustus S. Holman, Sr. and Mother Artie Mae Holman.  The ministry began as Thursday night Bible Class in the basement of their ranch style home at 10468 Halls Ferry Road, St. Louis, Missouri. Bishop and Mother Holman were in total agreement regarding opening their home to the Saints.  Later that year they humbly obeyed the voice of the Lord and began holding regular Sunday service with 8 faithful members (THE GIDEON FEW).  Elder Reginald C. Speed, Sr. was appointed Assistant Pastor and Elder Edward G. Holman, Sr. was appointed Junior Pastor.  These two would become Bishop Holman’s JOSHUA AND CALEB, respectively.

TRUE GOSPEL TEMPLE CHURCH’S first family members were Mother Lillian Tillman, her daughter Goldie Green and Goldie Green’s children.  The Word of Healing AND Deliverance went forth and the basement ministry filled up with people dressed in their Sunday best.  Bishop and Mother Holman not only fed the Saints Spiritual Food every Sunday but they fed them Physical Food as well.  In 1987 the Lord spoke to them again and said, “IT IS TIME TO GET A BUILDING”, and directed their attention to the former Payless Shoe Store located at 2429 N. 14th Street.  With little money in the bank yet trusting God, Bishop Holman stepped out on faith and made a gallant offer of $35,000 for the building.  THE BASEMENT MEMBERSHIP sang inspirational songs such as “Climbing Up the Mountain” and “We’ve Come This Far By Faith”, and they fasted, prayed, and waited for God to answer.  After the offer was accepted, the building was renovated with the CHURCH LOOK and TRUE GOSPEL TEMPLE CHURCH officially opened its doors in February of 1988.

From the very beginning TRUE GOSPEL TEMPLE CHURCH experienced many adversities and struggles leaving to question, “Did God really call us to do this work?”  But Bishop and Mother Holman pressed through the wilderness experience by fasting and praying and TRUE GOSPEL TEMPLE CHURCH became an Army of Warriors for God.
